Car blast in Odesa is treated as terrorist attack, Ukrainian ex-military is injured

The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) has said that a car explosion in the Kyivskyi district of the city of Odesa is being treated as a terrorist act and has opened a criminal investigation.

Quote from SSU: "The pre-trial investigation is ongoing under Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (terrorist act). We will provide further information on the details of the investigation later."

Details: The SSU's press office added that, together with the National Police of Ukraine, is carrying out a set of measures to establish all the facts and identify those involved.

Sources in law enforcement told Ukrainska Pravda that the blast injured a retired Ukrainian serviceman who has a Group II disability.

Background:

  • On the morning of 16 February, a car exploded near a residential building on Akademika Korolyova Street in Odesa. A 56-year-old driver was injured and taken to hospital.
  • It is the second car explosion in the same district in the last 10 days. On 6 February, a Toyota exploded on Akademika Korolyova Street in Odesa, killing the 21-year-old owner. Sources in law enforcement told Ukrainska Pravda that he had been a soldier.
