Russian soldier sentenced to life imprisonment for execution of two Ukrainian POWs

The Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv has found a Russian serviceman guilty of executing Ukrainian prisoners of war and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Quote: "The convicted individual is a rifleman of the 1st Company of the 1st Battalion of the 40th Separate Marine Brigade of the Pacific Fleet of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

In January 2025, during fighting in [Russia's] Kursk Oblast, he and other servicemen set up an ambush. Two Ukrainian defenders surrendered: they laid down their arms and raised their hands. Despite this, the accused opened fire.

Both prisoners of war were killed."

Details: The court established that there had been no military necessity to use force and that the convicted man was fully aware of the criminal nature of his actions.

The convict's actions were classified under Article 28.1 and Article 438.2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, violation of laws and customs of war committed by a group of persons, resulting in the death of persons protected under international humanitarian law.

The court also partially upheld a civil claim: UAH 50 million (about US$1.2 million) in moral damages has been awarded to the plaintiff, to be recovered from the convicted individual.
