Quote: "According to Ukrainska Pravda, the attempted assassination of the First Deputy Head of Russia's General Staff (formerly the GRU) Vladimir Alexeyev in Moscow almost derailed the negotiations.
At that time, the Russian delegation was led by GRU head Igor Kostyukov.
The Russian authorities immediately blamed Ukraine for the incident, which Kyiv denies."
Details: Regardless of Kremlin accusations, the attempted attack reportedly stalled the negotiation process for weeks, though talks did eventually resume.
Background: Alexeyev, who was the target of an assassination attempt in Moscow on 6 February, was the senior Russian representative at the negotiations in Mariupol in May 2022 during the withdrawal of the Mariupol garrison from Azovstal.
