Quote: "Tonight, we adorn our European institutions with the colours of Ukraine. Two colours, carrying the spirit of courage. Two colours, burning with resistance. Four years into Russia's full-scale war, these colours are shining brighter than ever. Slava Ukraini."

Details: Over the past four years, EU institutions have regularly illuminated their buildings in blue and yellow on the anniversary of the invasion, on Ukraine's Independence Day and on key dates marking historic decisions on the country's European integration.

Background:

  • On 24 February 2022 at 03:50, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launching large-scale missile attacks and crossing the state border from multiple directions, including Belarus.
  • In spring 2022, Ukraine's defence forces forced Russian troops to retreat from Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy oblasts. Following the liberation of these areas, the world learned about mass atrocities committed by Russian forces against civilians in Bucha, Irpin and other towns.
  • In autumn 2022, Ukrainian forces conducted successful counteroffensives in the east and south, liberating almost all of Kharkiv Oblast and the right bank of Kherson Oblast, including the city of Kherson.
  • From 2023 to 2025, active combat shifted into a difficult positional phase in Ukraine's east and south. Russia continues to launch missile and drone attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure, while Ukraine, with support from international partners, defends its territory and targets Russian military assets, including in temporarily occupied Crimea.
