US President Donald Trump has once again blamed Ukraine for the lack of progress in talks on ending the Russo-Ukrainian war, claiming that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy now holds "even less cards".

Details: Commenting on the ongoing US-brokered talks between Ukraine and Russia, Trump said Zelenskyy "has to get on the ball, and he has to get a deal done".

"I think Putin is ready to make a deal," Trump repeated once again.

The US president did not explain how he believes Zelenskyy is obstructing the negotiating process, but said Zelenskyy is not showing enough willingness to negotiate and that "it's unthinkable that he's the obstacle".

"You don't have the cards. Now he's got even less cards," Trump said, without explaining why he thinks so.

The Biden administration also came in for more criticism from Trump for supplying ammunition to Ukraine for free when it could have been sold to countries in the Middle East instead.

At the same time, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the US has asked for help in countering Shahed loitering munitions, which Iran is now using extensively in the Middle East.

Background:

  • The previous round of talks with the Russians took place in February. Moscow recently said that there is no clarity on the venue for the next meeting because talks cannot be held in Abu Dhabi, as previously planned, due to the war in the Middle East. There have been signals from the Kremlin that Russia may withdraw from the talks if Ukraine does not agree to territorial concessions.
  • The European Commission said Moscow's position was "an excuse" and an attempt to drag out the negotiating process.
