Stolen cash-in-transit vehicles belonging to Ukraine hidden at Hungary's Counterterrorism Centre

Hungary has hidden the cash-in-transit vehicles belonging to Ukraine's state-owned Oschadbank seized on 5 March at a restricted facility within its Counterterrorism Centre.

Details: Oschadbank said earlier that the location of the vehicles, which were carrying US$40 million, €35 million and 9 kilograms of gold, had been identified by representatives of the Ukrainian Embassy in Hungary and the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

Hungary's Counterterrorism Centre is a law enforcement body controlled by the country's Ministry of the Interior. The centre has previously been involved in anti-Ukrainian government actions, for example, in the case involving the detention and expulsion of a former Ukrainian diplomat.

Meanwhile, the whereabouts of the seven Oschadbank employees who accompanied the cash-in-transit vehicles remain unknown.

Previously: On the night of 5-6 March, the National Bank of Ukraine issued an official statement accusing the Hungarian authorities of illegally seizing cash-in-transit teams from the state-owned Oschadbank. The incident involved two vehicles that were carrying out routine cross-border transfer of currency.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the employees were Ukrainians held hostage by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's regime and called on Budapest to immediately release the bank staff and return the seized property.
