Details: Jetten reaffirmed that the Netherlands believes Ukraine belongs in Europe.
Quote: "It is crystal clear to the Netherlands that the future of Ukraine lies in Europe. It is part of the European family and should become a member of the EU in the end. It is important that Ukraine continues the work on reforms and I am impressed by the work that has already been done over the past few years in times of the war, also proceeding with the necessary reforms to become an EU member."
More details: Jetten also announced that in the coming months, "we will need to discuss with all our European partners the realistic timeframe" for Ukraine's accession.
Background:
- Zelenskyy has called on the European Union to set a date for Ukraine's accession to the EU without delay so that Russia, with the help of Hungary, will not be able to block the process for the next 50 years.
- However, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said it is impossible to set a specific date for Ukraine's accession to the EU.
- Earlier, European Pravda reported on the European Commission's initiative to introduce new rules for candidate countries' accession to the EU: this issue was covered in detail in an exclusive interview with European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos: "We don't need Orbán to determine the requirements for EU accession."
