Quote: "SAMP/T is currently the only alternative in Europe. This year we will see whether the new SAMP/T systems can intercept ballistic missiles. We will receive the system this year and test it against ballistic threats. If it works, it will provide long-term effective support."

Details: According to Zelenskyy, if SAMP/T proves successful, Ukraine will be first in line to receive new systems.

Quote: "If we succeed with the French and are able to intercept ballistic missiles, this will be the first such alternative. And of course, Emmanuel and I agreed that Ukraine will be first in line. Once the systems start intercepting ballistic missiles, a queue will immediately form. My main goal was to ensure that we would test the system together and be first in line. For now, I don't see any other alternatives."

Background:

  • Recently, Volodymyr Zelenskyy also spoke about Ukraine's aim to obtain a US licence to produce ballistic missile interceptors.
  • Through the efforts of German Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius, Ukraine is expected to receive over 30 interceptors for the Patriot air defence system in the upcoming weeks.
