Quote: "We are sincerely grateful for this timely contribution, which reflects Norway's principled leadership and steadfast support for Ukraine during this period of immense challenge.
At a time when Russia's ongoing attacks continue to place a significant strain on our economy, this support is vital for maintaining Ukraine's macro-financial stability and ensuring the uninterrupted functioning of essential public services."
Details: Svyrydenko pointed out that the PEACE programme was launched in 2022 after the start of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine. Since then, partners have provided Ukraine with US$52 billion through it, including US$13.4 billion for pension payments.
Background:
- At the end of 2025, the Norwegian government said that total Norwegian financial support for Ukraine in 2026 would reach €19 billion.
- A vital €90 billion EU loan for Ukraine has reached a deadlock due to it being blocked by Hungary and Slovakia. A resolution is unlikely at least until Hungary's parliamentary elections in mid-April, as the issue has become part of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's election campaign.
- Orbán has directly linked his position to the resumption of Russian oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline, the suspension of which he considers a purely political decision by Kyiv.
- However, the European Commission hopes that the issue of the €90 billion for Ukraine will be resolved by 19 March. It has also been reported that the EU has devised a "plan B" to provide Ukraine with at least part of the required funding.
