He declined to provide further details for security reasons.

The 82nd Airborne Division, based in North Carolina, is regarded as one of the military's top conventional combat units, and some of its elements are always ready to deploy anywhere in the world within 18 hours.

These troops are trained to enter a target area by parachute or helicopter and seize it.

The 1st Brigade Combat Team, based in New York, is a part of the 10th Mountain Division and is fully equipped for sustained combat, or "full spectrum" operations in military terms.

Background:

  • CNN reported earlier the US was preparing to send about 1,000 more paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East.
  • CNN also reported Washington hopes to hold a round of talks with Iran on ending the war next weekend, on 28-29 March.
  • The US sent a "15-point plan" which in effect sets out Washington's demands for ending the war. The list includes demands on limits to the weapons Iran may possess and a point on ending support for proxy groups in the region. Iran is also being required to accept the existence of the state of Israel.
  • White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also said the US would strike Iran "harder than they have ever been hit before" if Tehran does not acknowledge its defeat in the war.
