Details: The Estonian foreign minister said that now is a historic moment to integrate Ukraine into the EU and NATO. According to Tsahkna, this decision would guarantee security for both Ukraine and Europe as a whole.
"Because it's not only about us to give security guarantees to Ukraine, but also our region needs security guarantees from Ukraine, because Ukraine is now the largest and most efficient and most experienced military force in our region," the minister stressed.
In Tsahkna's view, leaving Ukraine in a grey zone would only enable Russia to continue its aggression on the European continent.
Quote: "So we need to see it together, because these grey areas or neutral countries or buffer zones – however we call them – these are just a green light for Putin to continue further aggression towards Europe. So we need to understand that this is our opportunity as well: Ukraine is now fighting not only for themselves and their freedom, but also giving us time to set the new structure for European security."
Background:
- On 1 April, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said after talks with Donald Trump's negotiators, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, that the sides have agreed to strengthen security guarantees for Ukraine.
- On 25 March, the Ukrainian president stated that the US was offering Kyiv security guarantees only in exchange for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the unoccupied part of Donbas.
- US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Zelenskyy's remarks to this effect were a lie.
- Zelenskyy maintains that the US is prepared to provide Ukraine with security guarantees only after Ukrainian troops withdraw from Donbas.
