Details: Asked by a journalist whether contact with the Russians is currently taking place, Budanov, former spy chief, replied briefly: "Yes."

Budanov said that during this contact, discussions concern "the issues we are working on" and the prospect of a prisoner-of-war exchange in the near future. Orthodox Easter, which falls on 12 April this year, is also being considered as a possible date.

Quote: "We are hoping. A day before or a day after (Orthodox Easter – ed.), but it can be expected. We are all expecting it."

Background:

  • At the end of March, Budanov said he hopes that a "major POW exchange" will take place on Orthodox Easter.
  • The Russian authorities also confirmed that work on organising a POW exchange with Ukraine is ongoing ahead of Orthodox Easter.
