Italy's PM names most effective weapon to achieve peace in Ukraine

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni believes that economic pressure on Russia remains "the most effective weapon" to force it to stop the war against Ukraine.

Details: Moscow faces a potential ban on imports of liquefied natural gas into the EU under short-term contracts from 25 April and under long-term contracts from 1 January 2027.

Speaking in Verona, northern Italy, Meloni said she hopes progress towards peace can be achieved before the ban comes into force.

Quote: "The economic pressure that we have exerted on Russia over these years is ​the most effective weapon to help build peace, and therefore we must be very careful about ‌how we ⁠move forward."

Background:

• Meloni also said she would reaffirm Italy's unwavering support for Ukraine during a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
• She also stated that it is still too early to consider the use of Russian gas, despite the war in Iran driving up energy prices and reducing supplies.
