Hungarian foreign minister Szijjártó: "I never served Russian interests"
Hungarian outgoing Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has stated that he "never served Russian interests".
Source: Szijjártó in an interview with Telex, a Hungarian news portal, as reported by European Pravda
Details: Szijjártó was asked whether his activities could be considered treason.
"This hurts me personally. For 11 years I worked towards normal, pragmatic relations with Russia," he stated.
The Hungarian foreign minister claims his country "benefited" from cheaper Russian energy.
He also stated that he is offended when called pro-Russian, as he "never served Russian interests".
"Accusing someone of treason is a very serious matter," Szijjártó stressed.
Notably, Szijjártó was the most prominent face of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's pro-Russian policy.
Background:
- Previously published recordings of phone calls, in which Szijjártó allegedly passed details of EU foreign ministers' meetings to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, sparked a political scandal during Orbán's election campaign. According to the transcripts, Szijjártó visited Moscow on multiple occasions after 2022 and offered assistance in easing EU sanctions.
- Hungary's incoming Prime Minister Péter Magyar recently stated that Szijjártó is busy destroying important documents relating to sanctions.
- Hungary's likely future foreign minister Anita Orbán warned him that destroying documents is an unlawful act.
