Quote from Romania's Defence Ministry: "On Saturday 25 April, the Ministry of National Defence was informed of the existence of drone debris in the curtilage of a farm near the town of Văcăreni, Tulcea County."
Details: The area was cordoned off by border police, and a joint team including experts from the Defence Ministry and the Romanian Intelligence Service was sent to the site to establish the circumstances of the incident and collect the debris for examination.
On 25 April, Romania's Foreign Ministry also summoned the Russian ambassador following the drone crash incident near the city of Galați.
Quote from Romania's Foreign Ministry: "Upon the orders of Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu, the ambassador of the Russian Federation in Bucharest will be summoned to the Foreign Ministry today due to the fall of a Russian drone near the city of Galați last night, which was used in attacks on Ukraine's civilian infrastructure."
Details: The ministry said Russia has violated the sovereignty of Romania's airspace in what it described as another irresponsible act that could have endangered public safety.
Quote: "This is an irresponsible and provocative act that violates the fundamental principles of international law. For more than four years, Russia has been waging an illegal war against Ukraine. This is not only a brutal imperial act of conquest against a sovereign neighbour, but also a violation of regional and global peace and security."
Background:
- Romania's Defence Ministry earlier reported finding wreckage from a drone that had fallen in a residential area of Galați municipality on the morning of 25 April, causing property damage. The debris was later neutralised by experts from the Ministry of National Defence, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Romanian Intelligence Service.
- Romania's Emergency Service said it has temporarily evacuated people who were near the drone found in Galați. Romanian President Nicușor Dan has said this was the first time a drone had caused property damage in Romania.
- The drone debris was found after Russia launched another large-scale aerial attack on Ukraine on the night of 24-25 April, including in the area near the Romanian-Ukrainian border.
