Details: Following a meeting of Fidesz's presidium, Orbán said the party has decided to "radically reform" its parliamentary faction ahead of its formation on Monday. He said Gergely Gulyás will head the faction, while he intends to relinquish his parliamentary mandate.

"The mandate I received as the leader of the Fidesz-Christian Democrats list is, in fact, a parliamentary mandate of Fidesz, so I decided to return it. Right now, it is needed not in parliament, but for the reorganisation of the national movement," Orbán said.

He added that the party will hold a nationwide meeting next week, while the congress to elect its leadership has been postponed until June.

Quote: "For nearly four decades, I have led our community. During that time, we have gone through successes and failures, victories and defeats in elections. But one thing has remained unchanged: this camp has always been the most cohesive and united political community in Hungary, and this unity is now very much needed by Hungary.

The presidium proposes that I continue my work as the head of Fidesz, and if the congress honours me with its trust, I am willing to take on the role."

Details: Just a few hours after polling stations closed in Hungary on Sunday 12 April, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, after 16 years in power, conceded defeat and congratulated his opponents on their victory.
