Ukrainian company BlueBird moves into missile development with focus on air defence

BlueBird Tech, a Ukrainian technology company, has announced the launch of a missile development division focused on creating air defence systems.

Details: BlueBird Tech said the new area of work involves developing air defence systems capable of intercepting not only Russian drones but also cruise and ballistic missiles. This could eventually reduce Ukraine's dependence on limited arms supplies from its partners, the company says.

Quote from BlueBird Tech co-founder Valerii Zarubin: "We at BlueBird Tech aim to change the very philosophy of rocket development. This has already happened in the drone market – they became mass and affordable precisely due to the deep strategy of Ukrainian manufacturers. Now, the main challenge lies in rethinking the cost of expensive missiles and transitioning to scalable, cost-effective production at local facilities."

More details: Zarubin said domestic production of air defence missiles can make the interception of aerial assets cheaper compared to the systems currently supplied to Ukraine.

BlueBird Tech also said the initiative aligns with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's strategy for developing domestic surface-to-air missile systems.

The company has already begun recruiting experts and is bringing in engineers for the new division.

BlueBird Tech said it will work simultaneously across several areas of missile development. In addition to defence systems, the company is also developing other solutions, details of which are not being disclosed for security reasons.

The first results of the company's missile development division are expected in the coming years.

• Earlier, BlueBird Tech presented a new line of Zhakh (Terror) first-person view (FPV) drones. These are three fibre-optic drones that differ in payload capacity. Ukrainska Pravda reported earlier that BlueBird Tech had upgraded its Zhakh FPV drone line, increasing its operational reach, boosting speed and expanding payload capacity.
• BlueBird Tech works in the fields of electronic warfare, signals intelligence and unmanned systems. Its known products include Chuika drone detectors, Zhakh FPV drones and Vishchun (Oracle) communication relays.
