Ukraine has received missiles for Patriot systems but needs more, Zelenskyy says

Ukraine has received missiles for Patriot air defence systems and AIM missiles following recent meetings in the NB8 and Coalition of the Willing formats.

Details: "To be honest, some Patriot missiles have also arrived. I cannot say how many, but some. We need more," Zelenskyy said during a press conference with Estonian President Alar Karis in Kyiv on 25 August. He did not specify which type of missiles Ukraine received.

According to the Ukrainian Defence Ministry, Patriot systems can use three types of missiles: PAC-2, PAC-3 CRI and PAC-3 MSE. PAC-2 missiles are primarily designed to engage aircraft and cruise missiles, while PAC-3 CRI and PAC-3 MSE can intercept ballistic assets.

As the Defence Ministry noted, AIM missiles have been in service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces for several years and are launched both from F-16 fighter jets and from ground-based NASAMS air defence systems. Ukraine uses AIM-9 Sidewinder, AIM-120 AMRAAM and AIM-7 Sparrow missiles to engage aerial assets.

Zelenskyy added that Ukraine had received confirmation that several Crotale air defence systems and missiles for them will be delivered.

Crotale NG is a French short-range surface-to-air missile system designed to engage aerial assets at low and very low altitudes. France has previously supplied Ukraine with two such systems.
