Details: Charles III said the world is facing a period of significant uncertainty, from Europe to the Middle East, creating serious challenges for the international community and directly affecting people's lives across different countries.
The British monarch emphasised that protecting Ukraine and its "most courageous people" requires "unyielding resolve". He said this is essential to achieving a "truly just and lasting peace".
He also highlighted the importance of the transatlantic partnership, saying that the alliance between the UK and the US, built over centuries, is "truly unique" and Britons are deeply grateful to the American people for it.
Charles III noted that this partnership forms part of a broader Atlantic alliance concept, which Henry Kissinger described as a "soaring vision" of the 35th US President John F. Kennedy, based on cooperation between Europe and America.
He said such a partnership is "more important today than it has ever been".
The King also stated that strengthening security begins with reinforcing defence. He said London recognises that modern threats require transformation of the armed forces and stressed the key role of NATO in this process. For this reason, the UK has announced its largest sustained increase in defence spending since the Cold War.
In this context, he referred to his own service in the Royal Navy more than half a century ago, highlighting the continuity of military tradition within the royal family, from his father Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, to earlier generations.
Charles III also mentioned the recent attempted attack on US President Donald Trump and members of his administration, stating that "such acts of violence will never succeed".
Concluding his speech, the British monarch stressed that the unity of allies is decisive for effectively countering shared threats and maintaining international stability.
Background:
- Charles III expressed support for Ukrainians at an event organised by the UK ambassador to the US on 27 April.
- The four-day visit is intended to mark the historic ties between the two close allies in connection with the 250th anniversary of US independence.
- Charles travelled to the US despite a shooting that occurred a day earlier in the presence of President Trump.
- UK officials ensured that the main meeting between King Charles III and Trump at the White House was held behind closed doors, amid concerns about a possible public confrontation similar to that seen during Trump's meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
