Trump discusses war in Ukraine with Xi, calls latest Russian strike "shame"

Donald Trump, while travelling back to Washington, confirmed that he had discussed Russia's war against Ukraine with Xi Jinping during his trip to China.

Details: Trump said that "it's one [issue] that we'd like to see settled".

Quote from Trump: "Until last night, it was looking good, but they [Ukraine] took a big hit last night."

He called it "a shame" and once again expressed confidence that the peace negotiations would succeed.

Background:

• On 12 May, before departing for China, Trump said that ending the Russo-Ukrainian war was already getting closer.
• On 13 May, Ukraine's military intelligence warned that Russia had launched a new combined air attack against Ukraine that could be prolonged.
• Following that, a Russian combined strike on the night of 13-14 May caused part of a multi-storey residential building in Kyiv to collapse. The attack killed 24 people, including three children.
