Trump discusses war in Ukraine with Xi, says latest Russian strike was "a shame"

US President Donald Trump confirmed on his way back to Washington that he discussed Russia's war against Ukraine with Xi Jinping while he was in China.

Details: Trump said that "it's one [issue] that we'd like to see settled".

Quote from Trump: "Until last night, it was looking good, but they [Ukraine] took a big hit last night."

He said it was "a shame" and once again expressed confidence that the peace negotiations would succeed.

Background:

• On 12 May, before departing for China, Trump said the end of Russia's war against Ukraine was "getting very close".
• On 13 May, Ukraine's military intelligence warned that Russia had launched a new combined air attack against Ukraine that could go on for an extended period.
• The subsequent Russian strike on the night of 13-14 May caused part of a multi-storey residential building in Kyiv to collapse. The attack killed 24 people, including three children.
