US President Donald Trump confirmed on his way back to Washington that he discussed Russia's war against Ukraine with Xi Jinping while he was in China.

Details: Trump said that "it's one [issue] that we'd like to see settled".

He said it was "a shame" and once again expressed confidence that the peace negotiations would succeed.
Background:
- On 12 May, before departing for China, Trump said the end of Russia's war against Ukraine was "getting very close".
- On 13 May, Ukraine's military intelligence warned that Russia had launched a new combined air attack against Ukraine that could go on for an extended period.
- The subsequent Russian strike on the night of 13-14 May caused part of a multi-storey residential building in Kyiv to collapse. The attack killed 24 people, including three children.
