Quote: "A Brave1 participant has created the first Ukrainian guided aerial bomb, which has already passed the necessary tests and is ready for combat use."

Details: According to Fedorov, development of the weapon took 17 months.

Fedorov said the Ukrainian aerial bomb "has a unique design and was created with the realities of modern warfare in mind".

"This is not a copy of Western or Soviet solutions but an original development by Ukrainian engineers designed to effectively strike fortifications, command posts and other enemy targets dozens of kilometres deep after launch," the minister said.

The warhead of the Ukrainian KAB weighs 250 kg. Fedorov added that the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has already purchased the first experimental batch of the munitions.

A video published by the minister shows a test flight of the guided aerial bomb after being dropped from an aircraft. The footage also notes that the project was developed with grant support from Brave1.

Pilots are currently rehearsing combat scenarios and adapting the use of the new bomb to wartime conditions.

"Ukraine is moving from importing individual solutions to creating its own high-tech weapons that systematically strengthen the defence forces and provide a technological advantage on the battlefield," Fedorov said.

He added that "Ukrainian aerial guided bombs will soon be striking enemy targets".

Background:

  • Ukraine's Defence Ministry recently published the specifications of the guided aerial bombs used by the Russians. These munitions have high-explosive warheads weighing between 250 and 3,000 kg, while jet-powered versions of Russian bombs are capable of travelling up to 150 km.
  • Earlier, it was also reported that Ukraine and France had discussed speeding up the delivery of aircraft and continuing work on large batches of AASM Hammer guided aerial bombs. French-made Hammer bombs are already being used by Ukrainian aircraft for high-precision strikes on Russian targets.
