The ministry said the Roshel Senator is an MRAP designed to protect its crew from landmines and other explosive devices. The vehicle was developed by the Canadian company Roshel.

Its key feature is a V-shaped hull that deflects blast waves and shrapnel away from the crew compartment during an explosion. The Senator MRAP also features high ground clearance, reinforced suspension, four-wheel drive and a diesel engine designed for off-road and demanding operational environments.

According to the Defence Ministry, the vehicle can be used for troop transport, medical evacuation and command-and-control missions.

Additional equipment includes a 360-degree protected armoured capsule, an all-round video surveillance system, a night-capable thermal imaging camera, remotely operated searchlights, a winch and additional storage compartments.

The vehicle is also equipped with protection against weapons of mass destruction, particularly a filtration system for chemical, biological and radioactive agents.

Details: The Roshel Senator MRAP is certified to NATO STANAG 4569 Levels 2 and 3 standards and can withstand armour-piercing 7.62×39 mm rounds, shrapnel from 155mm artillery shells and blasts equivalent to up to 8 kg of TNT.

"Today the threat posed by drones in operational areas requires us to act as quickly as possible, because protecting personnel is our number one priority... The new vehicles will significantly enhance the safety of our bomb disposal experts during humanitarian demining operations," said Major General Oleksandr Yakovets, Head of Ukraine's State Special Transport Service Administration.

Ukraine has been receiving Roshel Senator armoured vehicles since 2022. The enhanced-protection Senator MRAP variant was developed based on operational experience gained by Ukrainian forces using the vehicle.

Background:

  • In February, Canada announced that it was donating 449 armoured vehicles to Ukraine, including 383 Roshel Senator vehicles.
  • As of December 2025, Ukraine had already received more than 2,000 Canadian-made Roshel Senator armoured vehicles.
