Trump: It would be great if Zelenskyy and Putin met

US President Donald Trump has commented on Volodymyr Zelenskyy's open letter to Vladimir Putin and said he supports the idea of a meeting between the two leaders.

Quote: "Well, I don't know. I'm glad that they're maybe talking about meeting."

Details: Trump described Zelenskyy and Putin as "very good people" from two "incredible countries".

He also said that the US had done a lot to help make such a meeting possible.

Quote: "I think it would be great if they met. They should get it done."

Background:

• In an open letter dated 4 June, Zelenskyy proposed that Putin agree on a date and meet in person to discuss ending the war. He also called for Europe and the US to be involved in Russia-Ukraine negotiations.
• Zelenskyy further urged Putin not to prolong the war into 2027 and 2028.

• Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that Zelenskyy's open letter to Putin, calling for an end to the war, will be delivered through diplomatic channels.

• Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin had seen Zelenskyy's letter and that Putin will be briefed on it later.
