Details: The Coast Guard Command said the Duru 67 vessel was "attacked" west of the Russian-occupied city of Sevastopol on 5 June. The statement does not say who may have attacked the vessel or what type of weapon was used.

Five injured sailors were rescued by another trawler, the Burak Kaya, but one of them died on the way to Türkiye.

A coast guard vessel with a medical team on board caught up with the Burak Kaya about 213 km north of the Turkish port of İnebolu, and the injured were taken on board.

After a 15-hour return journey, the injured sailors were taken to hospital in the provincial capital of Kastamonu.

AP reported that Provincial Health Director Fevzi Yavuzyılmaz said they had sustained shrapnel wounds and that one of them underwent minor surgery on board the coast guard vessel.

"Two of our patients have relatively minor injuries and two have slightly more serious injuries," Yavuzyılmaz said.

Background:

  • In late March, an explosion occurred on the tanker Altura in the Black Sea, 15 miles from the Bosphorus Strait. The vessel, linked to Russia's shadow fleet, was carrying Russian oil. Turkish authorities suspected a drone attack.
  • Türkiye later expressed concern over the attack on the Turkish oil tanker in the Black Sea, warning that the incident posed serious risks to maritime security and could signal a dangerous expansion of the regional conflict.
