Leaders of the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) have supported the opening of all negotiating clusters on Ukraine's path to EU membership in June-July.

More details: The leaders added that Ukraine's accession to the EU should be completed as soon as possible, in line with the merit-based principle.

More details: The NB8 leaders also noted that Ukraine is NATO's strategic security partner, directly contributing to Euro-Atlantic security through its combat experience, technological innovation and industrial potential.

Background:

  • It was reported that the opening of the first Fundamentals cluster in accession negotiations for Ukraine and Moldova is scheduled for 15 June.
  • EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos asserted in Kyiv that Ukraine should integrate into the EU even before full membership.
  • Hungary had long blocked Ukraine's progress towards EU membership, with this veto overcome only after a change of the country's prime minister.
  • It was reported earlier that Hungary had lifted its veto on opening negotiating clusters for Ukraine.
