As a result, Ukraine met the deadline agreed upon with the Council of the European Union for approving the plan.
The government, where the issue was presented by Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Taras Kachka, approved amendments to the government's action plan on protecting the rights of persons belonging to Ukraine's national minorities (communities). The revised version was developed following consultations between Ukraine and Hungary.
Under the agreed-upon arrangement, a meeting of EU member states' ambassadors (COREPER) is expected to take place on Friday evening, where a decision will be formally approved to hold an intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg on Monday. During that conference, the EU and Ukraine are expected to open the first cluster of accession negotiations.
Background:
- The Ukrainian government considers it realistic to open all six negotiating clusters by July.
- Following the opening of the first cluster, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to attend the European Council meeting on 18-19 June.
