Quote: "While Russia has maintained the initiative on the battlefield this year, its gains have been far less steady. Furthermore, we see no indication of major changes in operational tempo or an imminent major Russian offensive due to [Russia's] reduced battlefield effectiveness."

More details: The official said Russia had suffered "between 1.3 and 1.45 million total casualties" since the start of the full-scale invasion, including around half a million killed.

He said Russian forces are continuing to operate with high intensity along the entire front line, especially on the Pokrovsk front, where they are seeking to consolidate their gains and advance towards the city of Dobropillia.

The official also said Russian forces are trying to take control of the city of Kostiantynivka. NATO expects urban fighting "to continue within the centre for the foreseeable future and Ukraine's ability to resupply is severely threatened by UAVs".

The official said Russian advances on the Zaporizhzhia front remain minimal.

Background:

  • The head of Estonia's intelligence service recently said the Russian leader is facing a "difficult choice" because of the current situation in Russia's war against Ukraine.
  • Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has suggested that the Kremlin leader is beginning to seriously consider how much longer Russia can wage its war of aggression against Ukraine and whether it makes sense to continue.
