Quote: "Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country that I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party. I have spoken with His Majesty the King this morning to inform him of my decision."

Details: Starmer said he had asked the Labour Party's National Executive Committee to approve a timetable for a party leadership election, with nominations opening on 9 July.

"In the case of a contest, this will ensure a new leader is in place before parliament returns in September. I will remain in post as prime minister until the contest is complete. And I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power," Starmer said.

Background:

  • On 19 June, the results of the by-election in the Makerfield constituency became known – Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham emerged victorious. This victory paved the way for him to stand as a candidate for the Labour leadership and thus as prime minister in opposition to Starmer.
  • Starmer said he would take part in any Labour leadership contest.
