Background:
- On 17 July, Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that preparations are underway for new steps in relations with Poland, particularly on historical issues, the opening of archives and search-and-exhumation work in Volyn.
- In his speech in Volyn marking the day of remembrance for victims of the Volyn tragedy, Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz spoke about the importance of reconciliation and the unacceptability of a "spiral of hatred". [The Volyn (Volhynia) tragedy is a series of events that led to the ethnic cleansing of the Polish and Ukrainian populations in 1943. The tragedy was part of a long-standing rivalry between Ukrainians and Poles in what is now Ukraine's west.]
