Zelenskyy meets former defence minister Fedorov amid sixth day of protests across Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held another meeting with former defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov on 21 July, as protests against Fedorov's dismissal have continued across Ukraine.

For the sixth day running, people in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities have taken to the streets to protest against Mykhailo Fedorov's dismissal as Ukraine's defence minister and in support of the removal of Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Background:

• On 16, 17, 18 and 19 July, demonstrations were held in Kyiv and other cities calling for Fedorov to be reinstated as defence minister and for Syrskyi to be dismissed.
• Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged that Fedorov and Syrskyi had been unable to find common ground and that problems on the battlefield, within brigades and with mobilisation remained unresolved.
• On 18 July, Zelenskyy said he had spoken with Fedorov and Syrskyi. He promised that "decisions regarding the army will be worked out".
• On 20 July, Syrskyi apologised to Fedorov and said he had not realised there was a conflict between them.
