Foreign cargo ship attacked by Russian missiles sinks off Odesa coast

A foreign-flagged merchant vessel that was struck by Russian missiles on 19 July has sunk in the Black Sea off the coast of Odesa.

Details: The vessel sank on 26 July. There was no crew on board at the time.

Kiper reiterated that the vessel had been hit while leaving port after being loaded with a cargo of Ukrainian maize.

The Russian strike killed nine crew members and a Ukrainian marine pilot. Eight other crew members were evacuated.

Background:

  • On 19 July, Russian forces launched a missile strike on the merchant vessel Golden Leo, sailing under the flag of Guinea-Bissau, in the Black Sea off the coast of Odesa. The ship was carrying a cargo of maize.
  • On 20 July, the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority reported that 10 people had been killed in the Russian strike on the Guinea-Bissau-flagged grain carrier near Odesa.
