Ukraine names two Russian soldiers as suspects in rape and murder of woman in Bucha

Ukrainian law enforcement has served two Russian servicemen with notices of suspicion for the rape of a 34-year-old woman in Bucha during the occupation of Kyiv Oblast in 2022.

Details: Investigators have established that the war crime was committed by two soldiers from the 234th Air Assault Regiment of the 76th Air Assault Division of Russia's Airborne Forces: Radey Zaburin and Denis Monakhov.

The war crime was committed in late March 2022. Monakhov was a deputy platoon commander who also served as a gun commander. Zaburin was the senior driver in a self-propelled artillery platoon of the 1st Battery.

The Russian soldiers took turns raping the 34-year-old Ukrainian woman at a private home before one of them killed her.

"After what she had endured, the victim tried to escape from the occupiers, but one of them opened fire on her with an automatic rifle. She died at the scene from gunshot wounds," the National Police said.

The indictment against the serviceman who opened fire has already been sent to court.

Meanwhile, both suspects have been charged under Article 438.1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – cruel treatment of civilians (as amended by Law of Ukraine No. 2341-III of 5 April 2001).

They face up to 12 years' imprisonment.
