"The attempt is a sign of the enemy's fear. And our retribution will make them fear us even more," the commander added.
Background:
- President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that an assassination attempt on Obolienskyi was foiled on 31 July.
- Ukrainska Pravda sources said that a 69-year-old man suspected of preparing to carry out the attempt on Obolienskyi's life was detained outside a barbershop in Kharkiv on 31 July. According to the sources, the attacker's weapon failed to fire. The man had approached the commander from behind.
- The attacker claims that his Russian handlers had posed as officers from the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) and convinced him that Obolienskyi was a "traitor".
- This evening the SSU and National Police officially announced the detention of the "potential killer" and said that a formal notice of suspicion against the man is being drawn up.
