Several dead after explosion at Moscow restaurant where general was reportedly celebrating birthday

An explosion has occurred at a restaurant in central Moscow which had been closed for a private event.

Details: Russia's Interior Ministry said three people were killed and 15 injured in the explosion, which took place near an outdoor seating area at the Balzi Rossi restaurant in Kudrinskaya Square.

According to Baza, at least three people were killed and 17 suffered serious injuries.

The Ostorozhno Novosti Telegram channel reports that the area where the explosion occurred has been cordoned off. Security forces, including a National Guard van, have been deployed and are preventing pedestrians from approaching the site.

Baza and Astra have reported that the restaurant had been closed for a private event.

An eyewitness told Astra that a general had been celebrating his birthday in the restaurant. Numerous vehicles with black licence plates – typically used by the armed forces and certain security agencies – were reportedly parked nearby. A National Guard bus was also seen in the vicinity. Astra noted that this information has not been independently confirmed and requires further verification.

Journalist Oleg Kashin has speculated that the birthday celebration may have been for Colonel General Aleksandr Chaiko, Commander-in-Chief of Russia's Aerospace Forces.
