Ukrainians expect war to continue into 2027, but over 60% are ready to endure it for as long as takes – survey

A majority of Ukrainians – 45% of respondents – believe the war may not end before the second half of 2027.

Details: Only 21% of Ukrainians expect the war to end at least by the end of this year and a further 15% expect it to end at least by the first half of 2027.

By contrast, 45% expect the war to end either in the second half of 2027 or later. A notable share – 19% of respondents – has no definite view on the matter.

"Ukrainians are thus predominantly prepared for the war to continue for a long time yet," sociologists state.

A rise to 61% has also been recorded in the share of those who are ready to endure the war for as long as necessary, following a decline to 48% in April 2026.

A shorter period of several months to half a year is currently cited by 20% of respondents, compared with 29% in April.

Compared with April, all regions show a trend towards a growing share of those prepared to endure the war for as long as necessary. In Kyiv in particular, the figure rose from 61% in April to 69% currently, against the backdrop of intensive Russian strikes on the capital.

For reference: The KMIS survey was conducted on 20 July-3 August 2026 across all government-controlled regions of Ukraine. A total of 974 respondents were surveyed – adult (aged 18 and over) Ukrainian citizens residing on government-controlled territory of Ukraine at the time of the survey.

Formally, under normal circumstances, the statistical error of such a sample (with a probability of 0.95 and taking into account the design effect of 1.3) did not exceed 4.1% for indicators close to 50%, 3.5% for indicators close to 25%, 2.5% for indicators close to 10%, 1.8% for indicators close to 5%.

Under conditions of war, in addition to the specified formal error, a certain systematic deviation is added. Factors that may affect the quality of results in wartime conditions were previously cited by KIIS.
