Russian refinery shuts down completely after Ukrainian drone attack

An oil refinery in the Russian city of Orsk has completely ceased operations following a Ukrainian attack on 11 August. Repairs to the facility could take up to six months.

Details: According to Solntsev, debris damaged key infrastructure that cannot currently be restored. The equipment at the plant is imported, meaning repairs could take up to six months due to sanctions.

Regional authorities are preparing to bring in fuel from other oblasts of Russia. Currently, 80% of the 287 local petrol stations are operational, with priority given to emergency and specialised vehicles. Police and volunteers are managing traffic near the petrol stations.

The Orsk refinery is located near the border with Kazakhstan, approximately 1,470 km southeast of Moscow. The facility is capable of processing six million tonnes of oil per year and produces petrol, diesel fuel, aviation fuel, fuel oil and bitumen.
