Estonian foreign minister on drone incident in Romania: the threat will persist as long as Russia continues the war

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna has called for increased pressure on Russia after yet another drone violated Romanian airspace and was shot down.

Details: Tsahkna noted that NATO has demonstrated its willingness and ability to defend every inch of its member states' territory by successfully shooting down the drone over Romania.

He also remarked that the threat to the allies will continue as long as Russia persists with its war against Ukraine.

"That is why we must maintain strong military, economic and political support for Ukraine while increasing pressure on Russia to bring its war of aggression to an end and achieve a just and lasting peace," the foreign minister emphasised.

Background: On the night of 15-16 August, an F-18 fighter jet from the Spanish Air and Space Force, which was patrolling Romanian airspace, shot down an unidentified drone that had violated the country's airspace.

Before the latest incident, Romania had shot down drones that had entered its territory on three occasions. These incidents occurred on 24 and 26 July.

Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu said that Bucharest had notified its NATO allies about the drone that violated the country's airspace the previous night and was shot down by a Spanish fighter jet.
