Ukrainian swimmer Mykyta Sheremet takes 50m freestyle gold at European Championships

Ukrainian swimmer Mykyta Sheremet won gold in the 50m freestyle final at the 2026 European Aquatics Championships on 16 August.

Details: Sheremet won gold in 21.13 seconds, setting a new Ukrainian national record. It was Ukraine's first swimming medal at this year's European Championships.

Another Ukrainian, Vladyslav Bukhov, finished fifth in 21.58 seconds.

In the semi-finals, Bukhov and Sheremet won their respective heats. Sheremet had only equalled the Ukrainian national record at that stage, matching the mark previously held by Bukhov.

The previous day, Ukrainian swimmers Stepan Babenko and Volodymyr Lisovets commented on their fourth- and fifth-place finishes in the 50m breaststroke final at the 2026 European Championships.

Both say they are determined to keep improving and raise the standard of Ukrainian swimming. Lisovets notes that he and Babenko have traded the national record over the past two days and expects their rivalry to continue.

Babenko, who finishes fourth after taking the Ukrainian national record from Lisovets in 26.72 seconds, admits to making several mistakes in the final but says he is pleased with the result.
