Polish foreign minister proposes creating European Legion involving Ukrainian veterans

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has called for the creation of a European Legion which Ukrainian veterans, among others, could join after the war ends.

Quote: "As the European Union, we need far deeper military integration. This is why I strongly advocate for a 'European Legion', a dedicated, standing force that could recruit seasoned professionals from the broader European family, including battle-hardened Ukrainian veterans after the war."

Details: Sikorski stressed that Europe must take responsibility for its own security.

"We cannot call Washington every time there is a fire in our backyard – whether that is a conventional threat or Moscow weaponising migration flows from Africa and the Middle East against the EU," he added.

Nonetheless, the Polish foreign minister emphasised that this would not mean creating a parallel alternative to NATO or duplicating its structures.

"What we need is a stronger European pillar within a stronger NATO. Our interests are complementary, not contradictory. The United States remains the indispensable anchor of our collective defence, but its role is evolving. America will continue to provide unmatched technological and intelligence capabilities, but Europe must do the heavy lifting on the ground," he said.
