Details: The funds are expected to be paid into the International Chornobyl Cooperation Account, through which repairs to the damaged confinement structure are financed.

Yesterday Shmyhal discussed the funding with Carsten Schneider, Germany's Federal Minister for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. A German delegation also visited the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and inspected the confinement arch and its infrastructure.

Quote from Shmyhal: "Repairing the confinement structure is extremely important to ensure the nuclear safety of Ukraine and the whole of Europe."

More details: The cost of the full restoration of the New Safe Confinement is tentatively estimated at about €500 million. The repair work is due to be carried out in 2028-2030.

Background:

  • In June, the European Union announced €75 million in grant assistance to repair the New Safe Confinement.
  • In April, the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development signed a €30 million grant agreement, enabling preparations for the repairs to the confinement structure to begin.
