IMF starts new mission in Ukraine

A delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), led by Ukraine mission chief Gavin Gray, has begun a new mission in Ukraine and will hold meetings with government officials and other stakeholders.

Details: The discussions will focus on the economic outlook and the Ukrainian authorities' commitments to macroeconomic reforms under the IMF's Extended Fund Facility (EFF).

IMF representatives will also discuss the draft 2027 budget with Ukrainian government officials.

Background:

• In June, Ukraine and the IMF reached a staff-level agreement on the first review of the four-year, US$8.1 billion EFF programme, paving the way for a new US$690 million tranche.
• Bloomberg reported that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was dissatisfied with the work of National Bank Head Andrii Pyshnyi, considering him too close to the IMF and not active enough in supporting the wartime economy.
• The IMF has reportedly irritated Zelenskyy with demands for a number of unpopular conditions in exchange for loans to support Kyiv.
