EU foreign policy chief suspects Russia behind drone incident in Leipzig

Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, suspects Russia was behind the incident involving a drone carrying explosives near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month.

Details: Kallas asked everyone to wait for an official statement from Berlin on the incident, but made it clear that she herself has little doubt about who was responsible.

Quote: "Let's hear Germany giving the news and information and sharing the intelligence that they have regarding these attacks. And then, of course, we can discuss what more we can do. It's clear that Russia is also… Well, now I'm linking it directly. But, let the Germans state what is behind [the incident].

What we see in other countries is that the Russians are provoking more and more. So the question for us is what do we do about this to deter them from going any further."

Background:

• German tabloid Bild previously reported that Berlin is expected to publicly announce soon that Russian secret services were involved in the Leipzig incident.
• On 1 September, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul promised a measured response to the incident.

• On 4 August, a drone carrying explosives was discovered at Leipzig/Halle airport near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft used to transport military supplies.
