Details: The security service provided no further details.

Meanwhile, reports have appeared on social media on the morning of 2 September about a shootout involving DIU and SSU in Kyiv's Dniprovskyi district, supposedly linked in some way to the disappearance of Stepan Kaplunov, deputy commander for combat operations of the Russian Volunteer Corps. [The Russian Volunteer Corps is a military and political organisation established in 2022 that consists of Russian volunteers who have been fighting for Ukraine since 2014 – ed.]

Kaplunov's lawyer Taras Borovskyi posted a video from the scene and said that law enforcement officers had arrived at the serviceman's home, after which his fellow soldiers came to the scene in response to an alert and gunshots were heard.

It has not yet been possible to get further details from the SSU or DIU, as their press services have not responded.

Update: Ukrainska Pravda has learned that the clash is continuing as of Wednesday morning. Sources have told UP that three officers from DIU have been wounded.

  • The Russian Volunteer Corps said that Kaplunov had been abducted by unknown individuals in the courtyard of his building.
  • Ukraine's State Bureau of Investigation confirmed to Ukrainska Pravda that it had received a report of Kaplunov's abduction from his lawyers and that investigators were examining it to determine whether the information should be entered into the Unified Register of Pre-Trial Investigations.
