Russian Volunteer Corps deputy head's lawyer speaks about condition of those injured in conflict between Ukrainian law enforcement bodies

Taras Borovskyi, the lawyer for Stepan Kaplunov, Deputy Commander for Combat Operations of the Russian Volunteer Corps , has confirmed that three Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) servicemen were injured in the conflict between representatives of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) and DIU in Kyiv's Dniprovskyi District. Two of them are in a serious condition.

Quote: "One of them had an artery severed by a gunshot to the leg and was bleeding heavily. He is in a very serious condition and is in hospital. The second is also in a serious condition in hospital. The third sustained a less serious injury."

Details: The lawyer, who was at the scene, added that an "urgent search" of Kaplunov's apartment was carried out at night, but that it was conducted in violation of the law. Borovskyi also said it was unclear to him what exactly investigators were trying to find and why they had come only on 1 September if the serviceman had been detained as far back as 23 August.

"The search of the home was carried out at night without allowing a lawyer to be present and without a court order, under the pretext of being urgent. It is stupid, because why conduct an urgent search if you detained the person ten days ago? Besides, other people lived in this apartment, and even if there had been something there – say, some incriminating items or something else – obviously it would have been gone long ago," the lawyer said.

Background:

• On 1 September, the Russian Volunteer Corps said that Kaplunov had been abducted by unknown individuals in the courtyard of his building.
• On the night of 1-2 September, information spread on social media about a shootout allegedly involving DIU and the SSU in Kyiv's Dniprovskyi District, and that it was somehow connected to Kaplunov's disappearance. As of the morning, Ukrainska Pravda reported that the standoff was still ongoing.
• Later, State Bureau of Investigation officers and the head of the SSU's Special Operations Centre Alpha arrived at the scene. According to Ukrainska Pravda, three employees of Defence Intelligence of Ukraine were injured as a result of the conflict.
• Meanwhile, in the morning, the SSU said that, together with DIU, it had prevented a terrorist attack against one of the leaders of the Russian opposition political national movement, who had arrived in Ukraine.
