Lawyer of Russian Volunteer Corps deputy commander reports on those injured in clash between Ukrainian law enforcement bodies

Taras Borovskyi, the lawyer for Stepan Kaplunov, Deputy Commander for Combat Operations of the Russian Volunteer Corps , has confirmed that three Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) servicemen were injured in a confrontation between representatives of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) and DIU in Kyiv's Dniprovskyi district. Two of them are in a serious condition.

Quote: "One of them had an artery severed by a gunshot to the leg and was bleeding heavily. He is in a very serious condition and is in hospital. The second is also in a serious condition in hospital. The third sustained a less serious injury."

Details: The lawyer, who was at the scene, added that an "urgent search" of Kaplunov's apartment was carried out at night, but that it was conducted in violation of the law. Borovskyi also said it was unclear to him exactly what investigators were trying to find and why they had only come on 1 September if the serviceman had been detained as far back as 23 August.

"The search of the home was carried out at night without allowing a lawyer to be present and without a court order, on the pretext of being urgent. It's stupid, because why conduct an urgent search if you detained the person ten days ago? Besides, other people were living in this apartment, and even if there had been something there – say, some incriminating items or something else – obviously it would have been gone long ago," Borovskyi said.

Background:

• On 1 September, the Russian Volunteer Corps said that Kaplunov had been abducted by unknown individuals in the courtyard of the building where he was living.
• On the morning of 2 September, reports spread on social media about a shootout said to be between DIU and the SSU in Kyiv's Dniprovskyi district, and that it was somehow connected to Kaplunov's disappearance. As of 10:00 this morning, Ukrainska Pravda reported that the standoff was still ongoing.
• Later, officers from the State Bureau of Investigation and the head of the SSU's Special Operations Centre Alpha arrived at the scene. According to Ukrainska Pravda sources, three DIU officers were injured as a result of the confrontation.
• Meanwhile, the SSU said this morning that, together with DIU, it had foiled a terrorist attack against a leader of a Russian opposition political national movement who had arrived in Ukraine.
