Trump suggests renaming Strait of Hormuz the "Trump Strait"

US President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz the "Trump Strait".

Details: Trump explained his suggestion by saying that the Strait of Hormuz is "under USA control".

"Now that we have it under USA control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT??? Like America itself, it would be 'hotter' than ever before!" he said.

Background:

• This is not the first time Trump has suggested changing geographical names, and in several cases he has gone beyond simply floating the idea. In 2025, for example, he signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America.
• A few days ago, he also signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario Lake America amid the trade war with Canada and has also considered renaming two oceans.
