Trump on meeting Putin: "I want to do it when that war is ending"

US President Donald Trump has said that his summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin will only take place when Putin is ready to sign a deal to end the war against Ukraine.

Quote: "We'd do it if I wanted it, but I want to do it when we're ready to do a peace deal. We want to have good relations with Russia, Ukraine, with everybody. Be great for business. Russia's got great land and very valuable land. A lot of good things happening. But no, we could do one. I could do it immediately. I want to do it when that war is ending, and I think we will."

"They ought to stop that stupid war," he said.
The US president also stressed that the personal relationship between the leaders of the two countries is standing in the way of achieving peace.

Background:
- CIA Director John Ratcliffe proposed a trilateral meeting between Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Putin aimed at ending the war during his covert trip to Moscow.
- The Kremlin responded by saying that such a meeting could take place only to "formalise agreements".
- On 31 August, Zelenskyy said Ukrainian and partner intelligence indicated that Putin has no desire to stop the war.
