Poll: 56% of Germans concerned about Russian threat to their country

More than half of German citizens believe that their country's security is under threat from Russia, a survey has found.

Details: A total of 56% of respondents believe that Russia poses a threat to Germany's security. The breakdown of opinions by party affiliation is notable.

The survey found that 73% of voters for Chancellor Friedrich Merz's CDU/CSU bloc and 73% of Green party voters see Russia as a threat, and 69% of SPD voters share this view.

Only among voters of the far-right Alternative for Germany does a majority (68%) not see Russia as a threat.

In eastern Germany, concern about Russia is generally lower – 42% believe the threat is serious or very strong, while 47% hold the opposite view.

The perception of the security risk posed by Russia varies across the population. While people aged 18 to 34 hold differing views on whether Russia poses a threat to national security, two-thirds of those aged over 65 consider the threat to be very high or high.

Background: On 1 September, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that Russia bears responsibility for the incident in which a drone containing explosives was found near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle airport last month.
