Ukrainian foreign minister urges US House of Representatives to approve Russia sanctions bill

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called on the US House of Representatives to pass the late Senator Lindsey Graham's bill on sanctions against Russia in response to Russian attacks on American business interests.

Details: Sybiha linked his appeal to members of Congress to Russia's recent strike on a Coca-Cola plant in Kyiv Oblast.

"It is yet another deliberate attack on American business interests and part of a broader Russian strategy to damage the US economy and squeeze American companies out of international markets," Sybiha stressed.

He added that the attack was not an isolated incident.

"Only strength will put Moscow in its place. In this sense, we once again urge the US House of Representatives to pass the Sanctioning Russia Act," the minister added.

Background:

• The Russia sanctions bill is facing growing resistance in the US House of Representatives and is likely to be blocked at least until the November congressional elections.

• Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, a co-author of the Russia sanctions bill, had previously expressed hope that it would receive final approval in September 2026.
• On 7 August, the US Senate voted 86 in favour of the Russia sanctions bill, co-authored by Graham and Blumenthal. The legislation provides for "punitive" tariffs on countries importing Russian energy resources.
• Earlier, the Senate disclosed details of the updated version of the bill.
