Record strike of war: Ukraine's Special Operations Forces hit critical Russian plants 3,000 km away

On 9 September, deep strike units within Ukraine's Special Operations Forces successfully hit two giants of Russia's gas condensate industry: the Novy Urengoy and Purovsky plants.

Details: This was the deepest strike inside Russia since the start of the war.

Both facilities are located in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, one of Russia's key oil and gas-producing regions. Ukraine's Special Operations Forces drones travelled more than 3,000 km to reach the targets. Until now, this area was considered an entirely safe rear zone for Russia, the SOF reported.

The facilities are critically important to the gas condensate industry. The plants prepare and process significant volumes of gas condensate extracted from fields in Yamal.

The Novy Urengoy Condensate Treatment Plant has a design capacity of 19.5mn tonnes of raw material per year, while the Purovsky Condensate Processing Plant processed 13.4mn tonnes of gas condensate in 2025.

The gas condensate industry is an important part of Russia's economy and generates revenue for the state budget.
