Details: Local residents reported hearing drones flying over the city overnight, followed by a series of explosions.
Witnesses also reported that Russian air defence systems were active near an industrial area.
Local authorities have not yet reported the extent of possible damage to processing facilities or any casualties.
Nizhnekamsk is home to one of the Russian Federation's largest oil-refining hubs. The attack targeted facilities that play a key role in financing the war and supplying the Russian military with fuel.
In particular, the Taneco oil-refining and petrochemical complex is among the five largest oil refineries in Russia, with a designed crude oil processing capacity of more than 16 million tonnes per year. The refinery is one of Russia's main producers of diesel fuel, aviation gas for fighter jets and petrol for cars.
Another major oil refinery, TAIF-NK, is located nearby. The plant can process more than seven million tonnes of oil and gas condensate annually. TAIF-NK specialises in the production of petrol, diesel and other petroleum products. Its products are actively supplied both to the domestic Russian market and for the needs of the Russian forces.
Another facility in the Nizhnekamsk industrial zone is Nizhnekamskneftekhim, part of the Sibur petrochemical holding company and one of Europe's largest petrochemical plants. The plant is effectively a monopoly in Russia for the production of many types of synthetic rubber and plastics.
Background:
- Nizhnekamsk is located more than 1,200 km from Ukraine's state border.
- This is not the first attack on strategic oil-refining facilities in the region. In August 2026, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported a successful strike on the Taneco oil refinery.
- In addition, in early July, a Ukrainian strike drone captured on surveillance cameras fell on the neighbouring TAIF-NK plant in the Nizhnekamsk industrial zone.
- On 10 August, drones attacked Nizhnekamsk in Russia's Tatarstan, where an oil refinery is located.
